Seismic upgrades were performed to this 1892 San Francisco landmark, to bring the building into compliance and restore the upper sections of this solid granite structure. My work began with documentation of the dimensions and then the removal of the base pier cap and balustrades stones above the rooftop cornice, followed by insertion of vertical and horizontal reinforcements. To lift the stones, I designed a simple lifting device, using an A frame mobile crane system traveling on steel tracks. This transferred the loads of the large stones slabs onto several of the roof trusses and the heavy exterior scaffolding. Cleaning and restoration of the balustrades was required, due to years of degradation resulting from weather exposure and earlier improvised safety features. To perform the restoration work, the stones had to be removed offsite from the rooftop using cranes, and then reinstalled with the upgraded seismic anchors |
